Exposing the Myth of the 3,000 Mile Oil Change

...In vehicle field tests under both high and low mileage accumulation rates, premium quality low viscosity synthetic engine oils provided excellent durability, engine wear protection and cleanliness under
severe extended oil drain interval conditions.

Society of Automotive Engineers Technical Paper #981444 (1998)

The Motor Oil Bible

Hello. My name is Michael Kaufman, and I am going to turn the lubricants industry upside-down. For decades you've been taught that 3,000 mile oil changes are a necessity.

My new eBook "No More Oil Changes" (previously known as "The Motor Oil Bible" - an electronic book now available in an "easy print" Adobe PDF format and soon to be available in MP3 audio) contains well over 125 pages of extensive information about automotive lubrication and filtration and completely debunks the popular myth that 3,000 mile oil changes are a necessity.

If you are serious about protecting your vehicle's engine and value your time and money, you NEED this eBook. The fact is, the information contained within this new eBook will save you thousands of dollars and countless hours of automotive repair and maintenance ...

BUT ONLY IF YOU CHOOSE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT

This book is based upon countless of hours of research, reading and experience working in the lubrication industry. The book offers much more than just a discussion of extended oil drains (which you'll see in the topic listing further down this page).

Nevertheless, many people still make their decisions regarding the usefulness of my book based upon their belief or disbelief of extended oil drains, and, consequently, on their trust or distrust of my information, since I am a proponent of extended drains.

So, in order to set the record straight and clarify that the idea of extended oil drains is not just something dreamed up by me or snakeoil salemen and the companies that supply their products, I'd like to provide you with some additional resources to "check up on me".

Countless other companies, organizations, books and technical papers have, for years, been studying and reporting on the viability of and benefits of extended oil drains. So, don't discount my book in its entirity simply because you don't believe in extended drains. I'm not the only one, and many of the companies and individuals that support the viability of extended drains are not going to receive any significant benefit from the implementation of extended drains.

The following are just a sampling of excerpts from the many technical papers and research studies that have been done which indicate that 3,000 mile oil changes haven't been necessary for many years. Listen to what others in the auto and lubricants industry were saying as much as a decade ago (oil and filters have improved even more since then):

The field trial results also document the performance of a premium fully synthetic engine oil at four times conventional oil drain intervals. Engine inspections conducted after 500,000 test miles confirm that the extension of oil drain intervals with premium diesel engine oils has no negative impact on engine durability.

1998 SAE Paper 982718 - "Extended Oil Drain Performance Capabilities of Diesel Engine Oils" by S.M. Letter, K.J. Kelly and M.A. Ragomo of Mobil Technology Company, R.C. Morrow of Mobil Oil Corporation and D.S. Nycz, G.M. Karl, D.F. Gullet, R.G. Dussault, B. Butler and T.H. Becker of Caterpillar, Inc.

Used oil analysis for test cars in the European Market demonstrated that engine oils can be already exhausted at 6,000 km (3700 miles) or could last up to 30,000 km (18,650 miles), depending upon the quality of the oil and use of the car.

1998 SAE Paper 981443 - "Extended Oil Drain Intervals - Conservation of Resources or Reduction of Engine Life (Part II)" by Karl Kollmann, Thomas Gurtler, and Klaus Land of Daimler Benz AG and Wolfgang Warkecke and hans Dieter Muller of Deutsche Shell AG

...engine oil servicing is still recommended in the range of 3,000 to 7,500 miles in the North American market. Extension of oil change interval recommendations beyond 15,000 miles is now being discussed within the international automotive industry. This paper documents the development and testing of new synthetic engine oil technology under extended service intervals of up to 25,000 miles or three years.

...In vehicle field tests under both high and low mileage accumulation rates, premium quality low viscosity synthetic engine oils provided excellent durability, engine wear protection and cleanliness under severe extended oil drain interval conditions.

1998 SAE Paper 981444 - "Advanced Synthetic Passenger Vehicle Engine Oils for Extended Oil Drain Performance" by R.J. Bergstra, W.A. Givens, W.L. Maxwell and W. H. Eichman of Mobil Technology Company.

Interested in more reading on the subject? Below is just a fraction of the available articles/studies focused on the effect of oil & filter quality/type on oil drain intervals. Just head over to the SAE website and do a search for the article number to purchase any of these technical papers. Most will run you $10 for a download or mailed copy:

And, not only is there a truckload of scientific test data and technical papers to support the information found in this eBook, there are over a dozen, unsolicited and uncompensated written testimonials near the end of this page from some very satisfied readers - and these are just a sampling of the positive responses I've had from readers of the book - from auto mechanics to engineers to guys who know about as much about cars as most supermodels.

If you really want to protect your vehicles and equipment in the best way possible for the least expense possible, you really can't afford NOT to download this book.

LET'S GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT

I talk briefly about this later on this page, but some people don't read that far, so I'm going to address this issue here as well. I am going to get on my soapbox for just a minute. I hope that I do not offend you, that is not my intention, so please bear with me for just a moment while I address a question that inevitably arises about once a day ...

I SELL OIL!!

The longer I spend educating people regarding lubrication and filtration issues, the more amused I am at their expectation of finding useful information from someone who DOESN'T work in the lubrication and/or filtration industry, and hence, would not have a bias in one way or another.

The simple fact is there are VERY few people who really know anything about oil unless there is a reason for them to. The reason is simple. To really understand oil and filtration takes a great deal of time and money. Time to speak with hundreds to thousands of people to get a well rounded view. Time to read through hundreds to thousands of technical journals & articles, test procedures, test results, technical specifications, oil industry propoganda, auto industry propoganda. Money to actually pay for those technical journals, industry association dues, test procedure specifics, etc.

What individual that does not work in the oil industry would waste their time? Would you? I doubt it. Your time, money and resources are directed toward other areas. Oil and filters are not "what you do".

The fact that you are on this page and have read this far indicates you have an interest in oil and filtration, but is that interest high enough to spend countless hours and hundreds to thousands of dollars satisfying it? Probably not.

So, I wonder, where do people believe they are going to find this magical conglomeration of illumination regarding oil and filtration except from someone who has a reason to know?

I make no apologies for selling oil or even a particular brand of oil. Most people who sell a product sell a particular brand or brands because they believe in them. Some people believe in them simply because they believe. Others believe in them because they have studied the alternatives and the industry long enough and well enough to know that they SHOULD believe in a particular brand or brands.

You may find within my book references to the particular oil that I sell, but there will be no blatant push toward that product. In fact, if you read my book carefully, you'll realize that I know this oil (or any other) is not for everyone. It depends upon how they drive, what they drive, how long they need to keep it running, how much money they want to spend up front and over the long haul, etc. I am not under the illusion that one oil is right for everyone, and my intent is not to "sell" oil by offering this book on the Internet.

The truth is, although some people may think that (and they are welcome to their opinion), I'd consider myself a very poor salesman if that was the intent of this book. The fact of the matter is that many of the people I speak with who have read my book choose to use other brands than what I sell for various reasons. I don't waste my time trying to convert them because it is neither in my nor their best interests to do so.

There are also many people who read my book that do decide to purchase the particular brand of oil that I sell. However, most of them find a local outlet or do a search on the Internet and come up with another distributor to purchase their product from. Very few of my ebook sales result in oil sales for me. So what. That's not the point of the book, and anyone who thinks it might be, please do not download my book just to check.

Your view is already tainted, so much of what you read in my book will be looked upon from a negative standpoint instead of with an open mind.

I discuss extended oil drain intervals in this book, fairly extensively. Since there are only a few oils out there that offer such capability, it makes sense that I refer to them.

One of those oils happens to be the oil that I sell. I have no intention of NOT mentioning that oil simply because people might think I'm biased. To leave it out would also be biased since they were one of the first companies ever to introduce long drain oils. It would be ridiculous to leave them out of the book because some people might think I'm biased.

Many people are looking for unbiased opinions about extended drains because they want to believe in it, but can't bring themselves to. So, they look for people to support the claims who are unbiased. Good luck to you, if you are one of those people. The people who are going to tell you extended drains are possible are people who are likely using extended drains themselves and are partial to oils that offer that capability. Therefore, they are biased.

The people who are going to tell you extended drains are not possible are either in the business of selling oil and don't like extended drains because they eat into their profits, or they are people who have used conventional oils and conventional drains for years "without a problem", "so why switch now?" That is not exactly an unbiased opinion either - nor is it an educated one.

Anyway, I'm stepping off my soapbox now. You now know that I sell oil. If that bothers you or the above information has offended you, you are free not to download my book. I won't be heart broken. The rest of you, feel free to keep reading. I promise ... no more lectures.

SO WHY TRUST WHAT I HAVE TO SAY?

I am a certified dealership technician. After reading your book, I find the material factual and intriguing. Synthetic Oil, and extended oil drains are definitely the wave of the future. I wish more people would read this book.

mikekkWell, that's certainly a fair question. I'd be asking the same thing if I were in your shoes. So, here's the scoop. I didn't originally go to school for lubrication and have no technical degree in this area. However, I have been consulting individuals and commercial businesses in the areas of automotive lubrication and filtration for over 10 years and can easily say that I know as much or more about oil than probably 99.5% of the population on this planet - and I don't say that to be cocky or arrogant - it's just a fact.

Also, consider that "The Motor Oil Bible" is ...

ENDORSED BY A THIRD PARTY LUBRICATION ENGINEER

"The Motor Oil Bible" is endorsed and recommended by David Mann, a major Detroit OEM Automotive Engineer and Lubrication Specialist with 17+ years of field experience. Here's what he had to say after reading my book (he has received absolutely no compensation for his endorsement):

The Motor Oil Bible is by far the most comprehensive, must-read lube and filter information ever integrated into a simple, easy to read format for the average motorist. But, in no way am I saying this information is only for beginners.  Competent mechanics and engineers will benefit as well.

As a Lubrication Specialist and Automotive Engineer with 17 years experience in the auto and lubrication industries (14 of them with a major automotive manufacturer), I believe "The Motor Oil Bible" is an absolute essential for every vehicle owner.  You simply won't find a more complete yet easy to understand resource for learning all you need to know about lubrication and filtration.

David Mann (click to send him an email)

EXPERIENCE AND PLENTY OF RESEARCH & STUDY

I've read every technical journal, every laboratory test result, every over-the-road test result, every technical specification, every oil analysis report, every book, every website and every company propaganda pamphlet I could get my hands on (that seemed worth reading). Much of it was worth reading and was well supported. Some, of course, was not so useful but was still well worth reading because it gives insight into the "mind" of the lube industry and lube and filter manufacturers in general.

I've also had some long discussions with numerous other lubrication specialists, seasoned mechanics and respected individuals in the lube, filter and auto industries. Those discussions have been invaluable. As every professional is well aware, networking with other respected members of one's industry can be a highly beneficial method of enhancing your knowledge of the subject matter.

However, even though all of that is important, experience also comes into play here. A lubrication "specialist" may have a great deal of book knowledge (which is important) but may not necessarily have a great deal of actual experience "in the field". That's not to say they would have none, but as with most industries, more experience is typically better.

Having direct experience with certain lubes and filters is always important. However, speaking with and actually listening to customers can provide a great deal more insight than you'll ever get from just your own experience. Yep, that's right, I said customers. As I mentioned earlier in my "soapbox" section, I sell oil. And, that offers me a tremendous opportunity to interact with thousands of people and draw on and compile data from all of their collective experiences. That helps me to know what works and what doesn't or sometimes just simply what works better.

Now, the fact that I sell oil may get your "propaganda sensors" in an uproar, but I've got to be up front about that. I do sell oil, and I sell a particular brand of oil that I am pretty partial to. I'm partial to it not only because standardized laboratory testing and technical specifications show it to be at the top of the heap, but also because years of consulting with a large base of customers has shown me that it consistently outperforms other products on the market.

Nevertheless, my book does not provide any direct connection to my "oil business" to get you to buy. You're not going to find any "buy now" links in here. In fact, probably 99% of the book doesn't even mention the name of the oil that I sell, and not once will I actually come out and tell you what I sell (although I'm sure you'll probably figure it out).

There are sections of the book that discuss how you might choose an oil that will fit your needs. In those sections, you will find that under many circumstances I believe this oil to be the best choice available, and I will say so.

However, there are also certain instances when other products may fit the bill better. I'm not afraid to say that. I'm not afraid to recommend a competitor oil or filter if I think they may have something my customer needs that I don't have or can't sell them.

I know a great deal about oil because I have to. It's my job. My customers require it. I couldn't sell the oil that I sell without knowing exactly what I'm talking about and being able to fully explain why a customer will benefit from using our product (because they won't be able to simply go down to Wal-Mart and pick it up for 99 cents/bottle).

Now, I'm passing that knowledge along to you. What you decide to do with it is your business. And, if you still don't feel that I have anything important to tell you about oil, please DO NOT download the book. In any case, you can't say I tried to pull the wool over your eyes.

WHAT DO OTHERS THINK?

Of course, I could easily talk till I'm blue in the face about why you need "The Motor Oil Bible". But, I think those who've actually read it can tell the story much better than I could. You'll find below copies of actual email testimonials that were sent to me by people who've read "The Motor Oil Bible" cover to cover.

Michael,

For years I have been in the dark about motor oils. Not knowing what the truth was or how to interpret oil test results. After reading the Motor Oil Bible I consider myself an expert on the subject and I am quite often the center of conversation on the subject.

I was able to make an educated decision on the oils to use in my cars and I feel quite confident I have chosen the best.

Thanks Michael for this fabulous material.

Ronald C. Berry - Bethel Park, PA
NOSPAMrcberry@adelphia.net

The Motor Oil Bible was extremely informative, answering the questions I had about how long a car can REALLY go between oil changes, not just what the owners manual says. I changed the oil in my PT Cruiser to a brand of synthetic oil guaranteed to last 1 year or 25,000 miles, and installed a high-quality oil filter.

I immediately noticed increases in gas mileage and power. Now, when I accelerate quickly, I no longer hear the engine struggling. Instead, it sounds smooth. I am only afraid my brakes may not last as long, because my car coasts so well now! I can hardly wait to see the difference when I get my new air filter!

I hope to drive my PT Cruiser for 3 or 4 hundred thousand miles.

Outstanding analysis of the functions and relative qualities of motor oil, oil filters, and air filters. This ebook was the basis for my decision to pursue extended-drain motor oil use and premium filtration products. It was a real eye-opener how people are settling for less, handing over their hard-earned cash for inferior protection of what is, for some, their largest investment.

Time will tell if the extended drain, superior filtration program makes my cars (a Chevrolet and a Volvo) last longer...in the mean time I am happy to be doing my part to minimize the hazardous waste problem we are all facing. I have switched to long-life engine coolant as well, and I think OAT (organic acid technology) should be mandatory to reduce our consumption and disposal of ethylene glycol too.

I have especially appreciated the empirical nature of the "Motor Oil Bible" e-book - I didn't feel like Mike Kaufman made bogus claims to support his thesis...it's hard to argue with the numbers. The problem I think is that most people just don't care enough about machinery to do a little research on the benefits of long-life synthetics, and the oil companies/quick-lube companies should be ashamed for pushing us to keep using a marginal product and buy more and more of it just because it's cheaper in the very short run.

We have the technology we need to improve our environment and make our cars last longer...thanks Mike, for getting the word out. You will always be fighting a battle as long as the auto industry has incentive for our cars to die early. I thought I was the only one who has been thinking about this!

Matthew Smith - Ledyard, CT

I was amazed at how little I actually knew about the "life blood" of my engines! You are providing a great service to all who are lucky enough to find your website. The price you ask [it is now free] is little to pay for the wealth of information you provide. I hope you continue to "flesh out" your most useful work and perhaps provide an updated comparison appendix as you receive more information. I am very pleased!

Hi Mike,

Your "Motor Oil Bible" was great!! I downloaded it and feel it was one of the best buys I ever made. Following the information you provided I changed to ****** Synthetic's on all my vehicle's and boat (351 Ford inboard/outboard).

The conversion in my 454 Chevy Work Horse Fleetwood (Pace Arrow Vision-36 FT.) motor home alone has increased my gas mileage by almost 10% and believe me this is a real benefit. This alone, in a very short time will pay for the "Motor Oil Bible" and the initial expense for all the oil changes. Thanks again for this "must know" information.

William Jesse Mayfield, Sr.
A very satisfied customer!!!

This book is a "must have" for any individual, company, or automotive - truck service provider. The factual and technical data is easy for the layman to understand, and the information is up-to-date.

This work will bring the reader out of the 19th century of refined petroleum lubricants and into the 21st century of engineered lubricants. Don't leave home without it!

Will Miller - Largo, FL

Mike,

This web site and the purchase I made were exactly what I had been looking for. Most mechanics and articles I had read were very non-committal on the benefits of synthetic motor oils. In fact, their statements seemed to suggest that they knew very little about the topic. The Motor Oil Bible provided me with all of the detailed information I had been seeking.

Thanks!

Good Morning Mike,

I gave you another very happy customer last night. I just happened to be surfing Ebay last night, and ran across a guy who was selling his 1999 Mustang Cobra. In his sales ad he stated how he only used motorcraft oil and filters. So I told him to check out your oil bible.

He wrote back about an hour or so later, and the first word he said to me was WOW! He said everyone should have a copy... I just wanted you to know that I truly love your oil bible and am very happy with it, and will continue to pass it along in anyway I can. Thank You once again for ... caring about your customers.

I am currently putting together an incredibly user-friendly (and absolutely FREE) online motor oil comparison service, that will allow you to quickly compare any of over 350 different oils, from over 30 manufacturers in about 20 different viscosity categories. Compare all oils from a single viscosity or oils from multiple viscosities at once. Narrow the list by only including oils with a viscosity index over 150 and/or a pourpoint below -40 and/or NOACK score less than 10 or any number of other criteria. Show only certain brands or show all brands. Show all the specs or only show certain specifications that you feel are most critical.

Don't know much about oil specifications, but want to know what's best? Use our proprietary ranking scores to compare the oils by overall quality without having to know what a single spec means (or purchase "The Motor Oil Bible" and you'll know what ALL the specs mean). Want to check that the specs are up to date and accurate? Just click the "more info" link for any oil to lookup the specs directly from the horse's mouth.

Don't like the way I've ranked the oils? Think I'm placing too much emphasis on certain specs and not enough on others? Change the weighting yourself. YOU decide which specs are most important and adjust the ranking scores to fit your own special needs.

If you've ever wanted to objectively compare all the motor oils on the market in one simple to use interface, you'll find it here. This application will be rolling out for Beta testing very soon, and it's only going to be opened up to a select number of people for this testing period. By purchasing "The Motor Oil Bible" today, you will be one of the first people notified when the Beta testing program opens up, so you can be one of the first to see this new powerful online application in action.

Purchase "No More Oil Changes" (The Motor Oil Bible) today and lock in your position as a Beta Tester.

Therefore, anyone who purchases a copy BEFORE the revision is completed, will not only receive the new revision free, they will also receive the MP3 audio version as well, when it's completed.
